Fall - or Autumn -photography is a great opportunity to find colour all around you. Photojojo - my favourite photography newletter - has a great piece on Fall Photography. Go check it out and sign up for more newletters.
Here's a couple of websites that give details of what rights photographers have when taking pictures. There is one for the US and one for the UK. They don't answer all questions but do help. Info from the Digital Photography School latest newletter.
I take lots of photos particularly for school to publish on our website; sometimes I do get requests from students not to take a photo or not to publish a photo which I usually honour although it can make life difficult. Mostly students are quite happy for me to take pictures and they enjoy looking at the galleries we produce. In any case I never identify students by name. Sometimes those students who didn't want a photo taking are then upset that the web gallery contains no pictures of them but only of their friends. They are also usually quite happy to publish the most dreadful pictures on their myspace/bebo/facebook etc sites so I don't usually worry too much. However, we do intend to regularise this by getting specific releases from parents rather than the more general release that is given at the moment when parents send their children to the school.
Any comments?
Yesterday's great excitement was that half way through the afternoon, the Internet came back on again for us. Much rejoicing by students who haven't been able to contact their friends, and amongst staff as well. In my computer lessons we are beginning a course on digital photography, so the lesson consisted of the kids getting used to the cameras and taking photos of each other. Then they had to copy the pictures to the computers - that was easier said than done. A number of the students wanted to use their camera phones, which I said was OK as long as they could get their photos from their phone to the computer. Some also had to delete some of their old work in order to make room for the new photos. Next stage will be cropping, resizing and red-eye correction, as well as a critical look at things like focus and composition. Then we will use PhotoShop to perform all sorts of trickery. Hopefully they will end up with their eyes opened to some of the possibilities that a digital camera and PhotoShop offer.
There was much excitement amongst the students; here are some photos of them taken by them.
